Hearing Evaluations

Whether you’re interested in improving your hearing health or just determining your baseline, you’ll first schedule a comprehensive hearing exam. A proper hearing examination in a sound-treated booth is key to establishing your hearing sensitivities. We are able to evaluate patients from the age of 2 through adulthood.

Communication & Functional Needs Assessment

Our standard of care includes a communication and functional needs assessment (CFNA). This is what makes our practice unique. It is an assessment that goes far beyond the basic “beep test” you may be familiar with. Our patients are successful and have the best outcomes because of this evidence-based approach.

Hearing Aid Selection & Fitting

It’s an exciting time in hearing healthcare because of the variety of options available! Now more than ever, selecting a solution that is right for you requires the expertise of a trusted provider. It’s our responsibility to stay current on the latest technology to be able to make recommendations that best fit your needs, lifestyle, and budget. As an independently owned clinic, we can always make decisions that are in your best interests.

Selecting hearing aids isn’t the end of the line. We’ll work with you after you’ve chosen your device to establish your success and comfort with your hearing aids.

Upon your fitting appointment, we’ll calibrate your hearing aids to your specific hearing needs so that they’re ready for you to use to your fullest ability from the moment you put them on.

You’ll also receive our instruction on best practices for care and use, including how to clean and charge your devices so that they are always working at optimum efficiency for you.

Experiencing your new hearing aids doesn’t really happen in our office, it will happen when you are out in the world. In your first few weeks, we’ll ask that you take inventory of how your hearing aids are performing so that we can make any necessary adjustments at your next post-fitting appointment. If you’d like to use the Bluetooth options of your hearing aids, we can help you connect your devices and walk you through the user process.

We’ll meet with you again in two weeks when you’ve had a thorough chance to experience your new hearing reality. At this point, you might be hearing sounds you haven’t heard in years and that will take you some time to really adjust to. We can talk through any further concerns and settle on a maintenance schedule for your hearing aids to make sure that you continue to have the best hearing available to you.

Real Ear Measures

Real Ear Measurement is one of the most important steps in any hearing aid fitting. It is the gold standard used to determine whether a hearing aid user is receiving the precise level of amplification needed at every frequency to achieve the best hearing improvement possible. There is no one size fits all.

When hearing aid manufacturers create a hearing aid and decide how to program it, they do so based on an “average” sized ear. Everyone’s ear canals are different. Your ear canals are as unique to you as your fingerprint. Many will be narrower, shallower, larger, or deeper than average. These variations make your ears acoustically different from others.

When we do real-ear measurements, we start by putting a thin, soft tube into the ear canal and playing a sound to measure how the size and shape of the ear affects and changes the sound. Next, we put the hearing aid into the ear and play speech to see what amplified sound looks like as it arrives at the eardrum. Combined with your pattern of hearing loss, we can then optimize your devices to match the desired amplification. While we cannot fully restore lost hearing, using this technology ensures that we come as close to that as is possible. Real Ear Measures make sure what we are doing is verified and making a difference!

Electroacoustic Analysis

Electroacoustic analysis (EAA) is the only way an audiologist can know for sure that a hearing aid is working within manufacturer specifications. We believe you deserve to get the quality you paid for. It’s our responsibility to make sure of it. That’s why it’s our priority to do electroacoustic analysis on all hearing aids before our patients are fit.

We use electroacoustic analysis (EAA) to determine if your devices are working to their promised efficiencies. By placing your devices into a test box, EAA can verify that the hearing aid hasn’t gotten weak, the frequency range is as big as it should be, there’s no distortion in the sound quality, it’s not noisy, and the batteries aren’t draining faster than normal. Once any problems are identified, we can develop a plan for repair.

Hearing Aid Repairs

Like any electronic device in constant use, some maintenance and repair are unavoidable. We offer on-site repairs for many issues that may arise. We can also work with your specific manufacturer to arrange factory repairs when needed.

We know how important skilled service and a quick return of your hearing aids is to your hearing life and we work to make sure your turnaround time is as short as possible. In some cases, devices can be loaned out for temporary use so that you don’t miss a thing!

You can mitigate damage from moisture and earwax by practicing daily caretaking.
Clean your hearing aids nightly, wiping them with a soft cloth to remove ear wax and moisture.
Replace batteries regularly.
Store your hearing aids in a safe, dry place.

Cerumen (Earwax) Management

Earwax is produced by glands in your ear canal to protect your ear. Excessive wax can result in temporary hearing loss or discomfort. We are proud to be the only clinic in the Indianapolis area using the Earigator ™ Cerumen Management System. With automated temperature and pressure control, our Earigator ™ system allows for safe and comfortable removal. It’s like a “spa” for your ears!

Under most circumstances, your ears are self-cleaning. Occasionally though, the ear might produce more earwax than necessary. Schedule an appointment with our audiologist who is familiar with the anatomy of the ear to determine the method of cleaning that’s right for you. After determining the specifics of your ear and eardrum anatomy, we will decide between using manual instrumentation or irrigation for your ear canal cleaning. Following professional cleaning, we can discuss at home products that can possibly help you avoid further impactions.

Tinnitus Management

Tinnitus is a condition in which a person might experience ringing or other noises in their ears. It can be constant or intermittent and vary in loudness. There are numerous tinnitus management tools to help make your tinnitus less bothersome.

Assistive Listening Devices

Beyond hearing aids, we also offer assistive listening devices (ALDs) for more specific assistance. They work to separate the signal of interest (speech) from the undesirable background noises to bring the essential information directly to your ears.

Hearing Protection For Hunters, Musicians, Military, and others

Excessive noise exposure can do a tremendous amount of damage, but there are ways we can anticipate and prevent further hearing loss through standard and custom hearing protection. We’ll work with you to select the optimal hearing protection option from a wide range of fitting options and styles.

A Centers for Disease Control study estimates that almost 40 million adults under the age of 70 have some degree of hearing loss from exposure to loud noise. Many people experience loud noise in work-related settings, like construction or the military. Others find their beloved hobbies, like auto racing or hunting, require special hearing protection. While we can intervene in noise-induced hearing loss with hearing aids, this type of hearing loss is irreversible and the surest cure is prevention.

Industrial Hearing Screenings

Noise can be an unavoidable hazard of many industries, but prevention is key to protecting workers’ safety. We can evaluate your team, per OSHA requirements or simply in the effort of proactive employee health, as well as provide education on best practices for preventing noise-related hearing loss.
