What to Expect at a Hearing Exam

Case History

We’ll sit down with you and discuss your health and hearing history. Hearing loss can be caused by a number of occurrences, and having a detailed history of prior illness or family medical history can assist us in assessing the reason for your own hearing loss.

Our treatment plans are never one-size-fits-all, so learning more about what brought you through our doors and your preferred outcomes is instrumental in helping us craft a unique path just for you. We’ll also inquire about your hobbies, work-life, social life, and family obligations to get a sense of how you move through the world and what types of hearing support are most important to you.

Physical Examination

We’ll physically examine your ears to make sure that there aren’t any physical obstructions or conditions contributing to your experience of hearing loss. Using a video otoscope, you’ll be able to also see what the audiologist sees projected onto the computer screen, as we check the ear canal for blockages (such as earwax) and the eardrum for injuries. This is a quick and painless procedure that clears the way for your actual hearing exam.

Hearing Tests

Our hearing tests are non-invasive and we make sure you’re as comfortable and relaxed as possible throughout the entire process. You’ll be in a sound-treated room so that we have clear and reliable results from your test, unaffected by the environment. Here are some common hearing tests we might use to evaluate your hearing.

The Results

Once you’ve received the necessary testing, we compile a comprehensive window into your individual hearing health. We’ll review each test and your results so that you have an understanding of exactly how and why you are hearing at your current levels. If there is a medical condition affecting your hearing, we can direct you to the right professional. You might not exhibit any signs of hearing loss through our testing protocols, and we can help you investigate perceived hearing loss further or fit you with protective hearing gear that will serve as a preventative for future hearing loss.

If we find that you can benefit from treatment and you would like to pursue that option, we can begin the process of determining your best hearing solutions course. We’ll reference the information provided earlier in your case history and talk more specifically with you about what parameters and needs you have around hearing aids. Hearing aids enhance your hearing experience and improve your hearing health, but that does not mean they are for everyone, nor is the path to easier hearing always quick and straight. There is an expected evaluation and adjustment period. We will be with you every step of the way to ensure that you are satisfied and comfortable with the hearing solution you decide upon.
